Untuk Opa (To My Grandfather)

2021

video, glass, wax, cloth

This piece is a dedication to my grandfather who lived halfway across the globe in Indonesia. As my grandfather grew ill during the pandemic, feelings of anxiety over his wellbeing prompted me to create this work as a means of processing the situation.

In the video, I write an epistolary poem to my grandfather in my native language. I use a pen-like tool called tjanting that holds hot liquid wax. This tool is used for making batik, a traditional hand-dyeing technique from my homeland. Instead of the typical copper and wood, the tjanting is made of glass. This material poses challenges in the functionality of the tool. Not only is the pen fragile, but the glass also slows down the flow of wax. The struggle to write and the thought of time indicate my frustration as I found it difficult to convey my honest emotions to my frail grandfather.
