Consumption of Shame
2022
video, banana leaf, glass
This video was a reflection on the shame culture that was taught to me since I was a child. This part of my culture is embedded in me through my upbringing that when I moved to the United States where the values and standards are different, it was hard to change and adapt to the new environment.
In the video, I repeatedly write impressions on a banana leaf, which is a very versatile and functional plant in Indonesia. The impressions read “sampai jadi debu” which could be translated into “until it turns to dust”. Then I took some glass leaves that resemble leaves of the shame plant. I chewed on the glass leaves as a reflection of breaking apart the shame culture that I grew up with. Then I spitted out the remaining dust into the banana leaf and folded the chewed glass inside that leaf.
